The Great Flying Dragons of old

"So God created the Great Dragons" ...Genesis 1:21 The Latin Vulgate; 5th Century

"What are Wyverns"? you may ask. They are two-legged dragons, having wings and a barbed and knotted tail, according to the American Heritage Dictionary...NordicNeedle

Many have made note of the obvious similarities between the large and obviously reptilian dragon and the creatures modern science calls dinosaurs. Science states that it cannot be dinosaurs that have led to the universal historical belief in dragons, because science accepts the notion that man and dinosaurs were separated from each other by miilions of years.

Here we want to focus on a specifc kind of allegedly mythological creature--the flying dragon.

The dragons shown above are all "contemporay" drawings of dragons. Dragons of course, can be drawn in any style, but what these particlar ones have in common are wings, head crests and "barbed" tails. These are common characteristics of modern drawings of dragons. Where did the idea for these unique characteristics come from?

We're going to suggest that these characteristics came from the one flying reptile that conceivably could have formed the basis for "dragon legends" if it had been seen by humans--the pterosaur/pteradactyl. As you can see in these two pterosaur arrays, they came in many different shapes and sizes.

Pterosaurs apparently had a wide species variation as do dogs for example. There is a very wide range of variation between the various types of dogs --but they are all still dogs, including wolves and foxes.

All pterosaurs however did have in common, two legs and two "arms" which were attached to their wings. Many of them had head crests. Many of them had a curious long, club tail as you can see in the arrays.

It is this elongated tail and the "club" at the end which clearly is the source of the "barbed" or darted tail which is a common characteristic of many flying dragons drawn today and as we'll discover, in the past as well.

That diamond shaped tail feature on a living creature is so unusual a morphological charateristic that it would be very difficult to make a case that it is simply a coincidence that dragons are often drawn with that feature, though we suppose that there are those who won't see a connection.

Still, perhaps a case could be made that modern artists have seen drawings of pterosaurs and have either consciously or unconsciously added features like head crests and stylized barbed tails to their drawings. Let's take a look at some dragon representations from the medieval period and earlier to discover when or if pterosaur characteristics were included.

Did Dragon Representations in History Present Pterosaur Morphological Characteristics?

As we've shown, there were many types of pterosaurs, perhaps hundreds of types just as there are hundreds of breeds of dogs, all of whom can still interbreed. Pterosaurs had two legs and two hands attached to two wings. Some had long barbed tails, some as shown in the drawings above had long non-barbed tails and some had short tails or were tailess. Many had some type of headcrest.

Question: Did artists, prior to the nineteenth century draw reptilian flying dragons with two legs, two wings, head crests and a tail...long and/or short and perhaps barbed or darted? In short, did they attempt to draw pterosaurs, the flying dragon of the dinosaur animal group. (though technically pterosaurs aren't considered dinosaurs).

As we consider this question, please consider that people of bygone era's weren't all idiots. Sure they were sometimes superstitious, but science has seen fit to see their evidence that they lived with these animals as largely worthless. Just remember that the Scientific Revolution began in 1543 with Copernicus and included Francis Bacon, Galileo and Isaac Newton.

The following pieces come most often from "scientific" books of the period, known as beastiaries or menageries that attempted to portray the variety of animal and plant life in the world. Quite ofte, items were drawn from descriptions only.

A dragon was said to live in the wetlands near Rome in December, 1691. The animal lived in a cave and terrorized the local population. A sketch of the skeleton has survived in the possession of Ingegniero Cornelio Meyer (left). The most remarkable thing about the animal is the clear head crest and the dual piece of skin from the crest.

Five digits were clearly visible for each foot, of the proper length and with the first shorter and offset from the rest as is proper for the S.. The upper arm bone can be seen at the front of the wing as well as the hint of the prototagium (in front of the lighter colored upper arm of the near wing).

There is a hint of a wing claw on the far wing where it curves forward. The tail vane is not visible, however that is not a skeletal feature and the dermal layer does not appear to have been preserved there. The aktinofibrils could be sketched in the wing that is clearly membraned. The wings are in front of the legs, on the vertebrae, matching the fossils.

The femur is properly shown as a single bone. The tibia and fibula, the twin lower leg bones, are visible too. Some have suggested that it could be a fossil or faked composite. It is much too accurate to be considered a fabrication. The survival of the skin suggests that it is not a fossil since it includes accurate wing features, a head crest, and the ears.

Finally from Syria he travelled to Malta and back to Rome.

Bat? or "Baby Pterosaur"?

Dinosaurs in Literature, Art & History-- Page 10 (s8int.com)

Man and Dinosaur Co-existence

Ancient Hammered Copper Ornament Depicts Bat?--or "Baby Pterosaur"?

The image above is of an ancient ornament from the Moche culture, ancient Mexico, circa 100 to 300 A.D. The gallery where this was found identifies the object as a bat on a crescent from the north coast of Mexico. The gallery may in fact be correct but we see another, more plausible explantion.

Actually, our theory would be more plausible to all concerned, we believe if it were not for the theory of evolution. As part of that paradigm, dinosaurs and certain of their co-inhabitators were believed to have become extinct millions of years ago.

here are bats:

Here at s8int.com, we believe that this ancient ornament represents a baby pterosaur rather than a bat. Here's why; the first an most obvious description of the "crescent" is that it represents an egg--such as when a baby chick breaks through its eggshell.

Bats are mammals and as such are born alive, No bats are hatched from a egg. On the other hand, pterosaurs are/were reptiles and did in fact hatch from eggs. There are a variety of types of bats and of pterosaurs and so its not possible to conclusively decide which type of bat or which type of pterosaur is being represented here. However, we provide a photo of several types of bats and one type of pterosaur which appears to be similar to the ornament.

You can decide for yourself what is in fact being represented, but we note that if one looks carefully at the ornament, you can see the tell-tale tail of the pterosaur hanging down slightly on the front of the "eggshell".

Earlier this year, scientists found a fossillized pterosaur egg in China. How would ancient South American peoples of the Moche culture be able to accurately represent a pterosaur exiting its eggshell (if in fact its not a bat), unless the artist had seen it happen?

Fremont Culture Pterodactyl Petroglyph--Why It's Called Black Dragon Canyon

Item 1

Indians of the Fremont culture are thought to have inhabited the "Swell" between 700 and 1250 A.D. The voluminous evidence of their tenure there includes, stone granaries, cooking utensils and cookfires; artwork (pictographs) or carved petroglyphs).

Black Dragon Canyon is named for one such pictograph (pictured bottom right)which resembles a large winged reptile or pterodactyl.

Item 2"Fran Barnes, a recognized authority on rock art of the American South-West, (who "despises" creationists") writes, 'In the San Rafael Swell, there is a pictograph [picture symbol] that looks very much like a pterosaur a Cretaceous flying reptile'..." (Swift, Dennis, "Messages on Stone," Creation Ex Nihilo, vol. 19, p. 20).

This figure, about 7 feet long from wing-tip to wing-tip, is actually painted with a dark-red pigment. Indians of the Fremont culture are thought to have inhabited the "Swell" between 700 and 1250 A.D. Black Dragon Canyon is named for the pictograph which resembles a large winged reptile with a headcrest.

Item 3

In 1971, Douglas Lawson, a masters candidate at the University of Texas in Austin, was performing geological field work in the park within the Javelina Formation.

He discovered a fossil bone eroding out of an arroyo bank. His professor, Dr. Wann Langston Jr., determined that this long, hollow, very thin-walled bone could only be from a pterosaur wing.

Subsequent excavations recovered more wing bones, but unfortunately the wing must have detached from the body before being buried and fossilized, because no body bones could be found. Lawson named his discovery Quetzalcoatlus (pictured top right) after the Aztec feathered snake deity Quetzalcoatl.

Dr. Langston continued to search and eventually found other specimens of Quetzalcoatlus in the park. Although these were smaller than the original, they were more complete and had a very impressive wingspan of at least 18 feet.

Comparison of these complete specimens with the huge bones of the original Quetzalcoatlus made it possible to calculate the body size of Lawson's specimen. This enormous pterosaur had an estimated wingspan of 36-39 feet, making it the largest known flyer of all time....Big Bend National Park

Big Bend National Park is about 900 miles from the San Rafael Swell.

The Rhamphorhynchoid Pterosaur Scaphognathus crassirostris

The Rhamphorhynchoid Pterosaur Scaphognathus crassirostris: A "Living Fossil" Until the 17th Century

Here are a few excerpts from an excellent article by John Goertzen, M.S,.on a type of Pterasaur which flourished until the 17th century. The author presents conclusive evidence; through accurate historical descriptions, literature, ancient coins, seals and ancient drawings which indicate that this particular dinosaur, and others were actual living entities.

Author: John Goertzen Subject: Dinosaurs

"There is evidence that pterosaurs may have flown the skies a couple thousand years ago. There are numerous depictions precise enough to identify the pterosaur species, Scaphognathus crassirostris, from several cultures of antiquity. Since that species is the only long-tailed species with a head crest, it is readily identified. Written accounts provide additional information about the ecological niche of these animals and (for Luther and the scientists Alpin) details that are consistent with the pictorial iconography.

......... The S. is easily identified since it is the only long tailed pterosaur with a head crest. Both fossils, currently known, were found in the Solnhofen limestone in southern Germany and display a skeletal head crest. Because the S. is the only rhamphorhynchoid pterosaur with a head crest, ancient artifacts enable us to tell what the soft tissue of the head crest looked like and identify ancient S. representations with a high degree of confidence.

...The remarkable thing about this animal is that it was depicted in several cultures of antiquity. Artifacts identified with this interesting pterosaur species include Roman-Alexandrian coins, an Arabia-Philistia coin, a French wood carving, a German statue and coin, several Middle Ages picture maps, and an enlightening sketch of a mounted animal in Rome by the scientists Meier-shown here on the right.

A dragon was said to live in the wetlands near Rome in December, 1691. The animal lived in a cave and terrorized the local population. A sketch of the skeleton has survived in the possession of Ingegniero Cornelio Meyer. The most remarkable thing about the animal is the clear head crest and the dual piece of skin from the crest.

Mexican Police Officer Attacked

In January of this year in Monterrey, Mexico, a young Police Officer ultimately passed out after calling for back-up in this "encounter". Briefly, the officer was on patrol, car stopped, when he saw a figure float down from a nearby tree. He described the figure a s a black clothed woman with a terrible face and wings.

if these creatures are really what we think they are, we are not surprised when tramatized witnesses describe vaguely humanoid (a head, two legs, two "arms", walking bipedally) as wearing black clothes or leather clothes.

The officer blacked out when the creature, perhaps irritated by his lights, alighted on his windshield an attempted to get at him.

The incident was in several papers and in the local news. Fellow officers claimed to have seen the same creature a few days earlier.

There were several other witnesses, including one who took video of what they described as a winged "humanoid" creature. Here on the left is a still from the video, from VirtuallyStrange.net, which appeared on a local news station. On the right is a mystery photo from Rense.com. If you think pterosaur, you should be able to make out the wing and the characteristically pointed head. The red line outlines the wing.

More Delays

Well God has other plans for me right now. I can't seem to get a kayak. In Feb every on in my house hold lost their job. I am still without work and am unable to hunt the Dragon we saw on the San Marcos River.

I am praying that I will land a Kayak this summer.

Update

I had a chance to speak with Ken Gerhard this weekend. It looks like we will be going on a couple of expeditions soon. I am in the works of getting a better kayak. On a side note I am also in the works, through some connections, of getting some night vision goggles! The ball is finally starting to roll. More coming soon..

Oh yeah and today is my birthday, I can't believe I am 32.. when will it ever end?.. wait.. don't answer that..LOL

The pterosaur in Houston, TX

Here is an interview of Richard Guzman who saw a pterosaur in Houston by my friend and fellow Dragon Hunter Ken Gerhard.

A Pterosaur in Texas
Written by Researcher Ken Gerhard

On Thursday, the 09th of October 2003, I interviewed Richard Guzman of southeast Houston, regarding an unidentified flying animal that he witnessed along with a companion in the early nineteen eighties. The event came to light after Mr. Guzman overheard a good friend of mine discussing Bigfoot at a job sight they were working together. According to my associate, Mr. Guzman came forward with the account after some apprehension and explained that he had been ridiculed in the past whenever he had brought the subject up. After my personal interview with Mr. Guzman, I was convinced by his sincerity and also by the consistency of his story, as I asked him questions. Here is his sighting as best he can remember.

At the time, Guzman was in his early twenties and was living at his family's house at 10005 Lucore Street off Allen Genoa and 225, between Pasadena and Houston. He believes that the sighting happened in 1983, but admits that it might have been a year or two earlier. He also thinks that it was probably summer, based on the foliage and warm weather. Richard and his longtime friend Rudy were outside leaning on Richard's Chrysler at around 6:00pm. It was still daylight with clear skies. Suddenly, they both caught sight of a creature that was flying about fifty feet off, but parallel to the ground in a more or less straight line about forty yards away. They both watched it for about fifteen seconds until it disappeared into some tall trees to the southeast of their location. According to my original contact, Guzman first described the animal as a "leathery bird" or "one of those pterodactyls on the Flintstones (cartoon show)." Richard later told me that it reminded him of Rodan from the Japanese monster movies. His description is as follows - "What got me at first was the head and tail," he explained. In three separate illustrations that he drew, the subject possesses a pointy beak, as well as a crest on the top of its head. Guzman's clearest memory is of its long snake-like tail that terminated in a sort of flange or sail. He insisted that the tail remained horizontal or rigid behind the creature's body as it flew by. Richard estimated that the animal's total length was about five feet, including the two-foot long tail, and that its total wingspan was about five feet across. He described the creature as being completely without feathers and its skin as being a golden tan, brown, or beige like leather. He also described the wings as looking like bat wings and noted that the creature mostly glided, only flapping its wings a couple of times slowly. He also distinctly remembered some kind of vertical indention (nostril?) in the side of the animal's skull. Guzman cannot recall for sure whether or not he saw any legs.

After the sighting, both men were startled and began to slowly question each other in order to confirm that they had both seen the same thing. Unfortunately, Rudy's life has subsequently taken a turn for the worse and he is currently incarcerated in the Houston City Jail. But Richard insists that Rudy will back up his testimony 100% if and when I can arrange an interview with him separately. As I mentioned earlier, Guzman apparently has only discussed this incident a few times and has always been ridiculed. Furthermore, he seemingly has no knowledge of either zoology or paleontology and has never been able to figure out exactly what it was that he saw that day. He also seems completely unaware that modem sightings of pterosaurs have been reported by other people.

It is worth noting the well-documented case of Harlingen ambulance driver James Thompson, who claimed to have seen an almost identical animal, less than three hundred miles to the southwest around the same time period. The serpentine tail is very indicative of the small pterosaurs known as rhamphorhynchoids. However, these early pterosaurs of the Jurrasic period supposedly did not possess the distinctive head crest of the later and larger pterodactyls. The distinctive tail also raises questions about a possible connection to legendary winged animals such as the Quetzalcoatl of Mexico, Piasa of Illinois and the Jersey Devil. Worldwide, some modern rhamphorhynchoid sightings have also come out of Africa (Kongamato) and New Guinea (Ropen). Dr. Karl Shuker once wrote that he was not aware of any rhamphorynchoid sightings from Texas besides James Thompson's. Now we have another one on record.

I just made contact with Ken and hopefully will be in the works of an expedition. As for now, I am trying to get a new kayak. Ken wants to interview Seve' and I this week about our sighting!

Land Dragons

My friend and fellow Dragon Hunter wrote an article about Land Dragons which is his specialty. It is finding itself all over the internet so I figured I would help push it by posting it here too. His name is Todd Jurasek and it is not a play on words, his real last name is Jurasek. Are Bi-Pedal Reptiles, Giant Monitors Still Alive Today?

Written by Todd Jurasek
What would it be like to encounter a giant 20-foot monitor lizard? Take Australia`s presumed to be extinct Megalania Prisca for example.

Imagine walking down a trail enjoying the scenery then "boom"!

You`re grabbed by huge jaws with curved one-inch razor-like serrated teeth. Though excruciatingly painful there would not be much of a struggle as your exposed blood incites the massive, powerful creature to feeding frenzy.

Besides saltwater crocodiles, no other animal in the fossil record struck more fear into the heart of ancient man in this part of the world. Megalania Prisca was a colossal reptile and it may still exist today.

That`s right. Today.

In 1961, Robert Grant and David George were exploring the Strachan Island District of Papua New Guinea when they encountered and enormous goanna (monitor lizard). In 1970, Grant told cryptozoologist Rex Gilroy, this beast was approximately thirty feet long and four feet tall on all fours, with a three to four foot long neck.

A similar creature was sighted in Australia in April of 1982. Walter Lake had been traveling to Karratha when a huge 20-foot plus mottled colored monitor cut across the road directly in front of him. Lake estimated its length at "about 22 feet from head to tail."

There is another predator equally as fierce in appearance and demeanor who potentially roamed Australasia (Australia, New Guinea and New Zealand) and Indonesia with man. Huge therapods, sometimes called Burrunjor or Murra Murri, may have even put even the giant monitors to flight.

The sighting of a living giant therapod occurred near Mt. Isa, Australia in 1961. A dust storm forced a group of hunters, including Tom Geoghan, to take shelter. In the distance across flat terrain, a huge bipedal reptile crossed in front of them. Geoghan reported the creature was up around 25 ft. tall standing on two legs, and had a very large head. Once the storm past, the men immediately got out of the area.

Two 20 to 25 ft. tall mottled colored bipedal reptiles were reportedly seen by travelers near Roper River Mission during 1986. As eyewitness Greg Asby reported to Gilroy "they looked like dinosaurs, like Tyrannosaurus or some similar species."

Giant reptiles, including Megalania sized goannas and living dinosaurs such as the bipedal Burrunjor, may exist in parts of Australasia and Indonesia today for a variety of reasons. There are for example, vast tracks of relatively unexplored, uninhabited land in the region. Habitat here is known to support a myriad of reptile species including some of the world`s largest such as the Komodo dragon, reticulated python, and the salt crocodile.

The fossil record additionally points to the fact that monster reptiles once roamed this part of the earth. If they were here in the past, then it stands to reason that some may have survived into the present. If the coelacanth and wollemi pine survived, why not a living therapod or super goanna?

Reptile metabolism is another factor to consider. Reptiles being cold blooded require less food to survive than mammals. Snakes for example, can go for months without food. Large reptiles such as Megalania and Burrunjor would likely not require the same amount of food to survive as a mammal of similar weight and size. The possibility also exists that such creatures, if left alone for a long enough period of time, could reach massive size within their genetic potential.

Proof of therapod dinosaur and Megalania survival additionally comes in the form of folklore, myth, and anecdotal eyewitness accounts within the region. Aboriginal "dreamtime" stories for example, spoke of fascinating mythical creatures known as bunyips. Some of these creatures may have been dinosaurs. The Aborigines certainly spoke of giant monitors or goannas, such as Megalania.

In 2001, 2002, and again in 2004, I explored the wilds of Australia. Additionally in 2002, I ventured to prehistoric Papua New Guinea. The major focus of my latter two trips was to search for and collect information on primarily Allosaur-sized therapods, other remnant land living dinosaurs, and giant monitor lizards. My research is ongoing and more expeditions are in the works.

Rather than go extinct, some dinosaurs, including giant therapods like Burrunjor and super varanids such as Megalania Prisca, may have just adapted to their ever changing environments. They could still survive in some form currently, possibly just a smaller version.

As academia scours the planet in search of the last remaining animal life, crypto researchers such as myself, Rex Gilroy and others hope to discover the "big one" somewhere in the hidden realms of the Pacific.

Oh, if you`re still pondering escaping the jaws of megalania prisca ponder this.

Freedom would only be temporarily as you would likely have been infected by deadly bacteria similar to those found in the saliva of a Komodo dragon, resulting in death hours later.

Escape or not you end up lizard fodder.

more on the Dragon Cliff

Well I drove to where the neighborhood where the cliff is and it looks like we are going to have to paddle to it after all. There were "no trespassing" signs everywhere and "Towing enforced / no parking" signs everywhere too.. oh well. I would rather paddle to the bottom of the cliff rather than fall off the top..lol

San Antonio Sighting.

here is a sighting reported in North San Antonio (about 40 miles from me)

This occurred sometime between summer of 1985-summer of 1986. I can't recall the exact time of year, but know it was warm (not a lot of help for south Texas). I was living in an apartment complex in NW San Antonio, TX, at the time, right on Huebner Rd. near Babcock. One night, my brother and I - both adults - were outside just talking, something we did frequently. We noticed some large creature just Huebner, flying very close above the utility wires along the road. The creature was large, at least six feet, though I believe it was more like 8-10 feet in wingspan. I know it was larger than any buzzard we had seen, and those can be big in Texas. Also, the shape was unlike any bird of prey that I have ever seen. This thing flew, or glided, back & forth over the wires for at least ten minutes while we watched. neither of us could recall exactly how long we observed this thing. The shape seemed more bat-like than bird-like, though that isn't right either. In later years, after reading about pterosaur sightings, and recalling this thing, that description seems most like what we saw. Being avid zoo-goers, and having seen many water birds, I can state that this was none of those with certainty. The flight patterns were wrong, as was the shape. One thing about this creature; whatever it was, it seemed to be watching us, and we both were very creeped out by the whole thing. There was a very real sense of threat from this creature, and I firmly believe that, had we stayed outside for too much longer, we might have been attacked by the thing. Perhaps all that prevented this was that there were two of us; I don't know. I have read other reports of pterosaur sightings that inspired a similar fear, and while no one can explain this, it reinforces my belief that this is what we saw. While I would love for proof of these things to be found, I don't know if I ever want to see another one. posted by Debbie Fisher

Dragon Cliff

I have been researching the area where we had the sighting using google earth. According to the 3D terrain view, the tree we saw her in is part of a large group of trees hiding a petty big cliff wall. There could be a cave. I found a way to get there by car, but it could involve some trespassing and being chased by dogs, again. So I am going to go feel it out today when I get off work and see if it looks safe and legal. It will only be about a mile walk through the woods to the cliff! I would rather paddle there but Serenity is down for a while. I am asking for a hard tandem kayak for my birth day (Oct 27th). Then we will paddle there and post there at night along with looking for caves.

Two Lessons Learned for Dragon Hunting

I don't know where to begin on this post. There are two topics intertwined in to one fun story. Or should I say one story with two lessons. My brother and I were very excited, okay, well, I was very excited and slightly obsessed given my renewal of interest in the field of cryptozoology, so I persisted that we venture out again after the river dragon last Friday. I wanted to see her again. She was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen in the wild. When I saw her, I was startled at first but then was mesmerized by the beauty of seeing a real dragon flying over my head and then away into the horizon. So we geared up for a night expedition.

We geared up with head lamps, flashlights, boots and BDUs. We were going to head from the “Island” to the beach where we saw her before and post there for a few hours. The water is very deep there because it is coming up to a dam. I think that this is why she was there before, this is where the bigger fish are. After reading more on the topic (reading the encounters and sighting reports from the past here in Texas) I realized that we are lucky she didn't attack us. She just became angry with us and flew up river to perch some where else. Seriously loud squawking at us right before she flew, like nothing I have heard before.

So we set off in Serenity, our inflatable kayak. Just to give a visual, Serenity is a yellow and red inflatable “sit-on-top” tandem (two person) kayak we got at a garage sale for $50. We have taken her on the river a few times now with lats of success and fun. San Marcos is where they train for the kayaking in the Olympics. However, the San Marcos river is an entirely different river at night. Having lights this time it was starting out to be a great experience. We saw all kinds of wildlife from raccoons to owls. It was very foggy and hotter than we expected. Unlike the last few night trips we have made, this time we had lights and could see the spiders that were hitting us in the face..lol. Sevé is a spider magnet. He will be sitting there and all of a sudden one will pop up on his leg to say hi... I picture the spider from Madagascar looking at him and saying “Well howdy-doo?” every time..lol...

So we are getting in to deep slow water when we hear some air coming from Serenity! We have had a leak before and patched it with some engine liquid gasket witch was something that we forgot to bring this time. The part of the river that we were in was particularly deep and had no banks to make port with. I found the leak, it was coming from the seam that attaches the seat back rest to the main part of the kayak. It was ripping and getting bigger letting out more air. We were already a good hour in to the trip and knew that there were no houses or civilization any where close so I held the hole with my finger while Sevé paddled. We were determined to make it to the beach but that was another half an hour or more away!. The rip got bigger! I was now using my thumb stuck in to the hole to plug it!. Sevé kept paddling as fast as he could, then it ripped again! This time there was no plugging it! I told Sevé to head to the bank so we would have a place to grab on to and not drown (I was wearing steel toed swat boots) We found a place to make port right when the rip let all of the air out of the main section of Serenity. She went down like a leaf in the wind. (a little “Browncoat” humor there)

So here we were regaining composure on the bank of the river in a remote spot. At that moment we were just happy to be out of the water. After a while we knew that we had to do something other than sit there, we needed to see what was over the large hill we ported on. When we got to the top we realized that this was a cow field. We saw lights way off in to the distance. We started walking, because lets face it, there wasn't much else we could do. We walked a little over a mile (maybe further) before we came to a fence. It was a small barbed wire fence beside a tree and it stood in the way of us that the lights in the distance that were looking more and more like street lights. This was not an easy trek. We were carrying Serenity deflated and rolled up, along with the ores, pump and our equipment. We were considering posting up here and sleeping till morning but there were countless piles of cow crap thus far, and where there are cows... there are bulls. So we kept trekking toward the streetlights. We figured we were going to have to walk back to San Marcos cause who would actually pick up two guys in camouflage BDUs covered in mud... at night? It just seems kind of shady.

We finally make it to the lights after a couple of miles of walking across this field. We met a new fence and a dreadful realization. This fence was 10 feet tall with barbed wire on top... and those were no street lights. We had come to a strange facility in the middle of nowhere. We couldn't tell what it was, a factory, or some kind of business for sure... only... no night crew or security guards.. no, it was Friday night.. and every one was starting there weekend. And here we were on the wrong side of the fence. We decided to try and go under the fence.. it had a couple of inches from it to the ground and a good few inches leeway when you pull up on it.. I figured I would try to go first since I am the biggest. Well I got about halfway when the Sevé's grip let up.. The bottom of the fence was sharp and ripped my shirt to shreds scraping my back a little.. He pulled again allowing me to get back from under the fence.

We figured we would keep following the fence even though it was so long that it literally vanished in to the distance. (well, plus it was dark) We walked a ways when we were elevated enough to see that on the other side of the parking lot that was on the other side of this huge fence was another fence then water! Like a lake or something.. Thank God we didn't make it through the fence cause then we would have been trapped in there...

We kept walking along the fence before we realized that these were backs of houses we were coming up on... where there are houses there are people and where there are people, there are phones to contact other people to get us. However we didn't want to trespass on to peoples yards and get chased by dogs again (...yes ... again..) About then we saw a car pass quite a ways down in front of us! So we continued toward the road.. We came across a back yard full of people having a party! We got their attention not caring how we were going to explain why we were dressed like like military refugees or why we were kayaking at night. I mean you can't tell people in this world and culture that we were looking for pterodactyls cause then they would call the cops thinking we are insane..lol

The gentleman who gave us a ride was the owner of the house and the manager of the “facility” we had come across. It was the San Marcos fish hatchery! We were not far from our car at all!

Okay, so What was the morals of this story?

1. Never go out at night on a 3 hour paddle in an inflatable kayak wearing steel toed boots, (Have accurate and reliable equipment)

2. Make sure you know your area very well before a night adventure (hello “google-earth”)

MY DRAGON SIGHTING

DHC member Seve' Gomez and I were kayaking on the San Marcos river 2 nights ago. (Oct 15th 2008) We had a great time.. The sun started going down sooner than we would have liked. but we expected it. Now .. I have been in the field investigating many cryptids in the past. Since I have moved from southeast Texas to central Texas (San Marcos) I haven't seen or experienced any cryptid activity. Studying this area I thought I might have a chance to see a chubacabras, but no luck there.

Two nights ago I had my first cryptid experience since my move. No wild apes, no red wolves, Big Cats, or ivory billed woodpeckers this time. No .. my dreams have come true in the cryptozoology field.. I saw a Pterosaur.

It is easier for me to to accept this than others because I do not believe the earth is 4.6 billion years old. I know the big thing that people talk about when they have a Pterodactyl sighting is ...
"How could they have survived for 65 million years?" ...LOL, but no one will think out side the box and question the science of the world even when the evidence is obvious.

We were not paddling, just kind of riding the current since the current was so strong after a lot of rain. The sun wasn't all the way down, so there was still enough light to see where we were going. We were in mid sentence talking when a high pitched shriek came from the top of a tree along the river interrupted us. There were multiple shrill squawks, like 4 maybe 5 enough that shut us up and get our attention, it was extremely loud! I looked up at the tree and saw it jump from one branch to another before it took off repelling the tree limb back like a catapult, this thing was heavy and big. It flew right over us and off in to the distance down the river. We had a good 15 to 20 seconds watching this thing fly. The wing shape was the most obvious and distinct.. they indicated no feathers and tapered to sharp points on the end just like a Pterosaur. And I saw what looked like a bump on the back of its head also the shape of a Pterosaur. I would estimate that it was about 6' (or greater) wingspan.. It was definitely bigger than a normal crane. We even say some cranes later to compare. Also bigger than a vulture witch I have seen up to 6' wingspan, so I know it was big. This is huge for me. Now, I am on a mission. This is why I am starting DHC.

This is a lot like what I saw. Just to give a visual.
